Kids Need Opportunities to eXcel

Knox Family Foundation

Our organization advances equitable opportunity for children and families through five interconnected program pillars. Each pillar (6'L's ) includes a flagship program designed to be scalable. Our goal is to build stronger, more resilient communities by addressing immediate needs while also fostering long-term opportunities for growth and success.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS

Across the Chicagoland region, many children and families continue to face significant barriers that limit access to education, stable housing, and basic needs. In Cook County alone, approximately one in four children is at risk of hunger, highlighting the ongoing challenge of food insecurity for thousands of families. At the same time, more than 73,000 Illinois students experience homelessness each year, demonstrating the widespread impact of housing instability on young people and their ability to succeed in school. Educational outcomes also reflect these challenges, with many students struggling to meet grade-level proficiency in reading and math and facing obstacles such as chronic absenteeism and limited access to enrichment opportunities. In some Chicago neighborhoods, nearly half of children grow up in low-income households, increasing the likelihood that they will encounter barriers to academic success, career readiness, and long-term economic mobility. These interconnected challenges underscore the importance of community-driven solutions that strengthen education, youth development, food access health and wellness, and family stability-ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
